Callisburg, TX

Callisburg is a small Cooke County city northeast of Gainesville and nine miles northwest of Whitesboro. The place took its name from blacksmith Sam Callis, remembered as its first settler, and the city incorporated in 1975. Its municipal map is compact: City Hall is at 59 Campbell Street, and the city council meets on the second Monday evening. Beyond the city limits, the Lake Ray Roberts planning area gives Callisburg a wider rural setting, linking the community to a large north-central Texas lake region and to neighboring Gainesville, Whitesboro, and Lake Kiowa.

Callisburg ISD is one of the town's clearest gathering points. The district's high school and middle school campus is in Callisburg, while the elementary campus is in nearby Woodbine; the district also serves the Lake Kiowa community. Local school support shows up through the Callisburg Education Foundation and the Kiwanis of Lake Kiowa, which has funded an outdoor pavilion and scholarships for students. The result is a place with a small city government and a school district whose footprint reaches well beyond the street grid. Callisburg's story is local, but its daily connections run across eastern Cooke County.
