About Calpella
Calpella is a Mendocino County community on the Russian River north of Ukiah, where U.S. 101 meets State Route 20. Col. C. H. Veeder and his son-in-law James Pettus founded the town in 1858, and the name comes from Kalpela, chief of the nearby Pomo village of Chomchadila. A post office followed in 1860, and early histories say Calpella once rivaled Ukiah before the county seat pulled trade south. Calpella is a Northern California place with a river through the middle and a Pomo name at its center.
