About Calumet City

Calumet City is a south suburban Chicago city with a complicated, colorful history. It was founded in 1893 when Schrumville and Sobieski Park merged as West Hammond, and later became known for vice, gambling, and illegal alcohol along the state line. Today one of its best-known landmarks is the pair of big smiley-face water towers, a source of local pride.
