Calvert, TX

Calvert is a city in Robertson County, Texas, about halfway between Waco and Bryan–College Station. The 2020 census counted 970 residents. State Highway 6 and Farm to Market Roads 979 and 1644 meet near town, and the Southern Pacific rail line runs through the local map nine miles north of Hearne. Calvert’s downtown and surrounding homes make up a 37-block National Historic District, with Queen Anne, Italianate, and Colonial Revival buildings still giving the streets an older Texas look. Calvert Independent School District serves local students.

The town was named for Robert Calvert, an early settler, legislator, landowner, and civic leader. The railroad arrived in 1868, and the town moved about two miles to the right of way, a change that fixed Calvert’s place in the county’s travel and shipping network. The Katy Hamman-Stricker Women’s Heritage Center occupies a former historic library and tells part of the city’s civic story. Calvert later became known for antiques and preservation, with local businesses working inside the old downtown buildings. It is a small Robertson County city where rail history, historic homes, and the roads between Central Texas cities meet.
