Cambria, WI

Cambria is a Columbia County village whose story begins with Welsh settlers, waterpower, and a name borrowed from Wales. John and Samuel Langdon settled here in 1844; one built a sawmill on Duck Creek while the other opened a store. The settlement moved through the names Florence, Langdon’s Mills, and Bellville before becoming Cambria in 1851. The railroad arrived in 1857, and village growth followed the same pattern as many Wisconsin farm communities: mills, rail, local shops, churches, and surrounding fields.

Today, Cambria-Friesland schools, the Jane Morgan Memorial Library, Tarrant Park, and the village pool give the community its regular gathering points. Fox Lake and the Fox River connect the village to the wider Columbia County water landscape, while local roads lead toward Randolph, Friesland, and other farm towns. Cambria’s Welsh beginning still gives the name its meaning, but the present-day village is shaped by a broader mix of village services, school activities, water, and the older transportation routes that helped it take root.
