About Cambridge City

Cambridge City was platted in 1836 where the Whitewater River, the National Road, the Whitewater Canal, and later several railroads met. U.S. 40 still runs through the center, and the town's historic district keeps the transportation story visible in its houses, storefronts, and public buildings. Canal Days arrives each September, giving the old canal route a place on the current civic calendar.

Cambridge City also has a present-day work map. Just south of Interstate 70, the Indiana Gateway Industrial Park includes Dot Foods, Taconic Biosciences, and Sugar Creek Packaging, putting distribution, research, and manufacturing alongside the older Main Street economy. Western Wayne Schools serve the area, while the Cambridge City Public Library houses local history collections and the Overbeck Museum. The town's identity is a layered one: canal and National Road history downtown, industrial jobs near the interstate, and school and library institutions filling in the daily middle. The result is a town where old transportation routes still organize work, memory, and movement.
