Cambridge, NE

Cambridge sits on the west bank of Medicine Creek near the Republican River in Furnas County, a location that shows its long relationship with water, rail, and farm country. The settlement began as Pickletown, laid out in the 1870s by J. W. Pickle. When the railroad reached the valley in 1880, the town was renamed Cambridge after a meeting of southwest Nebraska communities, with local businessman W. E. Babcock arguing for the name alongside Oxford. The change put the town on a permanent rail map and helped make it a service point for the Republican Valley.

Today the city’s civic life is spread across the Butler Memorial Library, Cambridge Public Schools, local businesses, and recreation around Medicine Creek. Cambridge High School remains the district’s sole high school, keeping school events central to the calendar. Two miles west and seven miles north, Medicine Creek State Recreation Area adds open water and wildlife land for boating, fishing, trails, and camping. Cross Creek Golf Links and the city’s historic museum broaden the ways residents and visitors use the area. Cambridge still feels connected to the creek that gave the first settlement its name, even after the railroad supplied a new one.
