Camden, OH

Camden is a Preble County village with a name that has already had two earlier versions. William Moore and other early settlers laid out the town in 1818 as Dover; it became Newcomb in 1824 after Ohio already had a Dover, then Camden in 1835, honoring Camden, South Carolina. The village grew beside the Cincinnati, Richmond & Chicago Railroad and became a local grain-and-stock shipping point in the nineteenth century. The Black Walnut Festival keeps the town’s name on the calendar each October. Camden is a western Ohio village whose story moves from a changed name to a railroad-and-farm center.
