Camino Tassajara, CA

Camino Tassajara is a compact residential community whose public arrangements reflect recent planned development more than a traditional town center. Contra Costa County permitted the roughly 767-acre Alamo Creek and Intervening Properties project south of Camino Tassajara in 2008. By the 2020 census, the census-designated place had 4,951 people within about 1.28 square miles, or nearly 3,880 per square mile. In 2020, 1,614 people were under 18, and 57.5 percent identified as non-Hispanic Asian alone. A 2026 county landscape assessment illustrates the area's split public and private upkeep: the assessment district maintains medians and frontage along Camino Tassajara, while homeowner associations maintain interior parks and landscaping. Transportation is equally specific to the neighborhood's design. County Service Area T-1 funds a demand-responsive commuter shuttle because county studies found too little demand for a full fixed-route bus.

Riders reserve morning pickups at their homes and evening pickups from Walnut Creek BART; the service averaged 5.1 riders per day in 2025. The same service area helps fund three TRAFFIX school-bus routes with 155 passholders, and their passes sold out immediately when released in 2024. Open land begins close to the developed streets. Sycamore Valley Open Space Regional Preserve spans approximately 696 acres of rolling ridges on both sides of Camino Tassajara, with elevations from roughly 600 to 1,000 feet. The southern Sherburne Hills unit is mostly grassland, while the northern Short Ridge unit adds oak savanna and woodland. Staging areas and neighborhood entrances lead to trails used for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and dog walking.
