Campbell, MO

Campbell grew from a settlement called Four Mile, established in 1844 in the Missouri Bootheel. The townsite was platted in 1886 and later took the name of Alexander Campbell, a local judge. U.S. 62 and Missouri 53 meet here, with the St. Francis River about five miles southwest. That geography puts Campbell between row-crop country and river bottoms, a setting that helped agriculture stay central as the town expanded. Peach growing became the signature local enterprise, giving the city a nickname that still appears in community promotion.

The annual Missouri Peach Fair began in 1944, when the American Legion, peach farmers, and local businesses joined to stage the first festival. Campbell still fills its calendar with school reunions, auto shows, craft fairs, yard sales, senior dances, holiday fireworks, and softball-field events. Campbell R-2 serves local students, and the Dunklin County Library maintains a branch in town. The city’s life runs on the same combination of farm work and gathering places: a crop with a season, a school with a calendar, and a set of community events that brings the surrounding Bootheel in.
