Campbell, NY

Campbell sits in Steuben County, New York, where the Cohocton River and the routes through its valley have shaped the town's map. The town was named for the Rev. Robert Campbell, whose family history is still tied to Hope Cemetery; the cemetery includes the first Campbell family burial and veterans from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, and War of 1812. Interstate 86 and New York Route 415 pass through the area, but the older local story follows the river crossings and the rail line.

Campbell's Curtis Bridge is thought to be the first bridge in the area to cross the Cohocton River. It is roughly 500 feet long, and the original wooden bridge remains beneath the later steel and asphalt structure. A second local landmark, Lackawanna Bridge, carried railroad traffic across a bend in the river; its steel-and-wood construction helped trains manage the winding channel and lay straighter track. These structures make Campbell's geography legible: roads, rails, river, and a town whose historic buildings still fill the valley.
