Campti, LA

Campti is a Natchitoches Parish town on the eastern bank of the Red River, with written records reaching back to 1745. The community is named for a Natchitoches Indian chief, and its location grew important because the river was the region's main route for people, supplies, and trade. The Great Raft, a massive log jam on the Red River, shaped navigation before Captain Henry Shreve cleared the channel. Campti's river landing made it one of the oldest settlements along the waterway.

The Natchitoches Tribe of Louisiana maintains its headquarters in Campti and continues its relationship with the lands and waters around the parish. The Freeman and Custis Expedition began in the Campti area, and Union forces burned much of the town during the Civil War. The community rebuilt around the same river and farm landscape, with cattle, crops, schools, a library branch, and the Campti Field of Dreams keeping the present connected to the older map. Campti is a place where tribal history, Red River movement, and northern Louisiana agriculture meet in one small town.
