Candlewood Lake, OH

Candlewood Lake is a planned lake community in northern Morrow County, just north of Mount Gilead in Congress Township. It began in the 1970s with a single home and was first listed as a census-designated place in 2010; by 2020, 1,329 people lived there. The place is organized around a 250-acre stream-fed lake, with residential streets, wooded lots, mobile homes, and RV sites filling out a private community on roughly 1,500 acres. It feels more like a neighborhood built around water than a conventional Ohio village with a central business block.

Water is the main local calendar: boating, water skiing, fishing, swimming, and pontoon rides all happen along about six miles of shoreline. Roughly 140 acres are set aside for parks, green space, and community amenities, so the lake is paired with plenty of land-based places to spend an afternoon. The Candlewood Lake Association owns and operates the community through an elected board, which means roads, property questions, recreation, and neighborhood rules all run through a homeowners’ system. Mount Gilead handles nearby errands, while Columbus and Cleveland are within driving distance for bigger trips. Candlewood Lake is small-town Ohio filtered through a lake-community setup: the water is the center, and the association is the town hall.
