Candor, NY

Candor is a Tioga County town south of Ithaca that contains the village of Candor. Settlement began around 1794 on the Watkins and Flint Patent, the town was formed from Spencer in 1811, and the village was incorporated in 1900. The West Branch of Owego Creek defines the town’s eastern line, while New York Routes 96 and 96B meet in the village. That combination of creek, crossroads, and two levels of local government gives Candor a broad rural map with a recognizable center.

Candor Central School District serves the town and village, and the town’s historic churches, businesses, fire department, ambulance service, and health facilities fill out the present-day network. Dairy farming remains an important trade, alongside more than 100 small and midsize businesses. Candor’s calendar includes a four-day Fourth of July celebration, a three-day Fall Festival, a Daffodil Festival, the Canducky Derby, the Catatonk Canoe Regatta, and seasonal parades. The 2020 town population was 5,172, spread across a community where school, farming, small business, and recurring events meet along the creek.
