About Canisteo
Canisteo Center is the original site of the Village of Canisteo, at the meeting of Canisteo River Road and County Road 119. It was never incorporated, and its post office—Center Canisteo—ran from 1851 to 1876. When the Erie Railroad arrived around 1860, there was no room for a depot between the tracks and the river, so the station went two miles upriver and the village grew toward it. Canisteo Center is a Steuben County hamlet whose whole story turns on a riverbank, a railroad, and a town that moved.
