About Canistota

Canistota is a McCook County city where the 2020 census counted 631 residents. The Chicago and North Western Railroad chose the site in the early 1880s, and the city was platted in 1883. Its name came from Canastota, New York, but a misspelling in the post-office application made Canistota the permanent version. The city incorporated in 1900 and now sits about five miles south of Interstate 90, between Sioux Falls and Mitchell.

Canistota's best-known institution is the Ortman Chiropractic Clinic, a century-old practice that draws patients from across the Midwest and beyond, including many Amish families. The Canistota School District runs a K–12 school whose Hawks teams give the city a shared calendar and school spirit. The clinic, school, and interstate make the city a recognizable stop in southeastern South Dakota. A grocery, post office, restaurants, medical care, and agricultural businesses fill out the local service map. Canistota is the kind of I-90 town where a spelling mistake, a railroad plat, and a famous clinic all remain part of everyday conversation.
