Cankton, LA

Cankton is a St. Landry Parish village of 583 residents in the 2020 census, at the parish's southern tip within the Opelousas-Eunice micropolitan area. It incorporated in 1960 after growing around an elementary school, a Catholic church, a grocery store, and several homes. The name honors Dr. Lois Aristide Guidry, known locally as Dr. Cank. As a boy, Guidry used a duck call to signal that he was coming home from hunting; the repeated 'cank, cank, cank' became his nickname and eventually the village name.

The story still has a physical address. Guidry's former medical office stands on Main Street beside the home he shared with his wife, and Cankton City Hall, built in 1979, houses the clerk's office, police department, and community center. Those buildings sit within a village whose daily scale remains tied to a few civic and commercial places. Cankton's name carries a local voice, a doctor's career, and the sound of a duck call, while the hall and old office keep that history visible in the present village.
