Cankton, LA

Located right on the southern edge of St. Landry Parish, Cankton is a quiet village of around 600 people with deep roots in Cajun country. The community formed around a Catholic church, an elementary school, and a local grocery store before officially incorporating in 1960. As for the unusual name, it comes from a beloved local doctor, Lois Aristide Guidry, known to everyone as Dr. Cank. When he was a boy, he used to blow his duck call on his way home from hunting, and the rhythmic "cank, cank, cank" sound earned him a lifelong nickname that eventually went on the map.

Living in Cankton offers the peace of open countryside while keeping you a short drive from Lafayette and Opelousas. Main Street still holds pieces of that early history, including Dr. Cank's original clinic alongside the town hall and community center. It is the kind of place where daily life moves at an easy pace, neighbors wave as you drive by, and you get wide-open spaces along with easy access to nearby jobs, schools, and great local food.
