Cannelton, IN

Cannelton is a Perry County city pressed between the Ohio River and the hills of southern Indiana. The name, adopted in 1844, comes from cannel coal, the fuel that helped shape the town's early industrial life. Cannelton served as Perry County seat from 1859 until 1994, and the old county courthouse now forms part of the Perry County Museum. The Cannelton Cotton Mill and the surrounding historic district keep the riverfront's manufacturing era visible.

The city still points visitors and residents toward the water. Cannelton's boat ramp, River Walk Trail, Hafele Park, Gazebo Park, and Eagles Bluff overlook connect the town to the Ohio River, while historic churches and Myers Grade School fill out the district. A branch of the Perry County Public Library adds a current civic institution. Cannelton is a small Indiana river city with coal in its name, cotton in its history, and a public map that runs from old mill buildings to the locks and dam.
