Cannon Ball, ND

Cannon Ball is a community on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota, where the Cannonball River meets Lake Oahe on the Missouri River. The 2020 census counted 864 residents. The river is more than scenery here: it is the feature that gave the community its name and, in the reservation's history, helped mark the northern boundary. The Standing Rock Agency was established at nearby Fort Yates in 1873, and an 1875 executive order extended the reservation's boundary to the Cannon Ball River. The reservation was divided into its present form in 1889, and the tribe's elected government remains part of the local landscape.

Local life is shaped by the reservation's schools and tribal institutions as much as by the water. Most students are in Solen Public School District 3; others attend through Fort Yates, where the Standing Rock Community Grant School is part of the school picture. Cannon Ball also became nationally recognized during the 2016-17 Dakota Access Pipeline resistance, when Sacred Stone Camp was established near the river and Missouri confluence. That history still matters because it connects this small community to questions of treaty rights, water, and tribal sovereignty.
