Cannon Ball, ND

Cannon Ball is a small, tight-knit community on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in southern North Dakota, situated right where the Cannonball River flows into the Missouri River along Lake Oahe. With around 850 residents, the town offers a quiet, rural lifestyle surrounded by open prairie and sweeping waters. The river shapes everyday life here, providing peaceful scenery alongside popular spots for local fishing, boating, and enjoying the outdoors at an unhurried pace.

Daily life is centered around family, tribal community programs, and local gatherings. For education, students generally attend schools in the neighboring Solen district or down in Fort Yates. While local conveniences cover the basics, many residents take Highway 1806 north to Bismarck and Mandan, about 45 minutes away, for broader healthcare, retail, and entertainment options. Cannon Ball gained worldwide attention during the 2016 pipeline protests, and that shared pride in protecting the surrounding land and cultural heritage remains central to the community today.
