About Canoochee
Canoochee is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Emanuel County, Georgia, United States. The 2020 census counted 70 residents. Georgia State Route 192 passes through the community. Linguist William Bright believes "Canoochee" may be a name derived from the Muscogee language, meaning "little ground". The short version is that Canoochee carries an earlier story into the places people know and use now. That is the local read on Canoochee: its past remains attached to the places people use now. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the place as the "Town of Canoochee" in 1912, with town corporate limits extending in a one-half mile radius from the Savannah and Statesboro Railway depot.
