Canton, KS

Canton is a McPherson County city; the 2020 census counted 685 residents. It is named for Canton, Ohio, and set among the roads and fields of central Kansas. The Santa Fe Trail crossed the wider region from the 1820s through the 1870s, and two local markers point toward that history: one at Jones Cemetery east of town and another south of Canton. Little River is part of the local geography, while U.S. and county roads connect the city to nearby communities.

The McPherson County Fair has been held in Canton since 1948, and the fairgrounds remain one of the city’s most recognizable gathering places. Canton-Galva USD 419 serves local students; the two communities unified their schools in 1972, forming Canton-Galva High School and its Eagles teams. Canton’s story has several layers that still overlap: a trail corridor, a river, a county fair, a school district, and a small city whose name looks east to Ohio while its daily life is rooted in the Kansas plains.
