Canyon City, OR

Canyon City is Grant County’s seat, set along US 395 about two miles south of John Day and near the meeting of Canyon Creek and the John Day River. Gold discovery on Canyon Creek in 1862 brought a rush of miners into the valley; the early camp became the town, and Canyon City became the county seat when Grant County was organized in 1864. The gold boom faded, but the courthouse and county offices kept the place central in the region.

Today the local map mixes county work, school, and the roads into Oregon’s high desert. Grant County offices, the courthouse, jail, road and health departments, Grant School District, and Humboldt Elementary are all part of the town’s institutional footprint. The Grant County Historical Museum holds the area’s mining and settlement story, while the annual ’62 Days celebration looks back to the 1862 strike. The local scoop is a former gold camp that still functions as the county’s government town, with US 395 carrying the connection south toward the Malheur National Forest.
