Canyon Lake, TX

The name Canyon Lake covers a broad ring of Hill Country settlements rather than one compact town. Sattler, Startzville, Canyon City, Cranes Mill, and Hancock all fall within a census area spanning 142.71 square miles around the reservoir. That geography took shape after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began Canyon Dam in 1958 to control Guadalupe River floods and conserve water. The dam was finished and impoundment began in 1964; at its conservation level, the lake has roughly ninety-three miles of shoreline. Residential development accelerated afterward, and the population reached 31,124 in 2020. Census estimates for 2020–2024 describe a largely owner-occupied community: 87.1 percent of occupied homes were owner-occupied, 23.5 percent of residents were sixty-five or older, and workers’ mean trip to work was 38.9 minutes. Daily access to the water depends on a patchwork of federal, county, and local facilities spread around the shore.

Corps campgrounds at Potters Creek and Cranes Mill provide RV and tent sites, while public-use areas add swim beaches, fishing docks, picnic grounds, and boat ramps. Trails offer land-based routes: the county’s 2024 inventory lists a 1.7-mile Canyon Lake Dam walkway, 7.6 miles of hiking and mountain biking at the Madrone Trail, and a 1.3-mile gorge overlook trail. The gorge itself records an exceptional local event. In 2002, floodwater crossed the emergency spillway for six weeks and cut a mile-long channel through ancient limestone, exposing fossils, dinosaur tracks, springs, and waterfalls. Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority and volunteer docents now lead educational tours and maintain the site. Tye Preston Memorial Library provides another center for a community without a single downtown. Its July 2026 schedule ranged from story times and teen volunteering to maker sessions and history talks, while a LAKEmobile stopped in outlying settlements such as Startzville.
