Capac, MI

Capac is a St. Clair County village in Mussey Township, roughly 25 miles east of Port Huron. The 2020 census counted 1,983 residents. It grew from a settlement established around 1857 into a rail village when the Grand Trunk Western station arrived in 1866; Capac incorporated in 1873. That sequence still gives the place its shape: the village sits on a rail corridor between the farms of eastern Michigan and the larger towns near Lake Huron, with its old center shaped by the station and the roads that met it.

The restored Capac depot has been moved and used as a museum, keeping the railroad's footprint visible even after passenger trains stopped defining everyday life. Downtown streets, village services, and Mussey Township's surrounding countryside make up the local map, while Port Huron and the I-69 corridor pull the village into a wider St. Clair County orbit. Capac is the kind of place where the clearest landmark is also the best clue: find the depot, and you can see why this small community formed where it did.
