Captree, NY

Captree is a small hamlet and census-designated place on the Outer Barrier in Great South Bay, divided between the towns of Babylon and Islip in Suffolk County. It includes Captree Island and the eastern end of Jones Beach Island, with Ocean Parkway running through the barrier-island landscape toward Oak Beach. The map can feel temporary—sand, inlet, bay, and road—but the state park gives the place a fixed public center.

Captree State Park occupies the island’s eastern tip and is built around saltwater recreation. It hosts Long Island’s largest public fishing fleet, with open and charter boats leaving for Great South Bay and the Atlantic, plus fishing piers where people cast or crab from shore. A boat basin, launch, bait shop, restaurant, picnic grounds, and views toward Fire Island Lighthouse fill in the day-to-day scene. Captree is also tied to the Babylon Union Free School District, even though much of the local activity is organized around the water. For a place with so few permanent residents, the park makes Captree feel like a working gateway to the barrier islands, fishing grounds, and inlets.
