Carbon Cliff, IL

Carbon Cliff takes its name from the coal seams in the bluff west of the Rock River. The village's name was in use by the early 1830s, when the area was a center of coal mining, and the mines were among the earliest worked on the river's west side. Rail service reached Carbon Cliff in 1854, helping connect the mining settlement to the wider Quad Cities industrial corridor. The village incorporated in 1907 after Hampton Township residents voted to form their own government.

The old mining story sits beside a very practical present-day map. Village Hall, the water and maintenance departments, the post office, Carbon Cliff Park, Little League fields, a pond, and a pavilion make up the village's civic map. Carbon Cliff-Barstow School District 36 serves the local elementary grades, while United Township High School District 30 serves the secondary grades. The village is a place where the bluff, the river, and the remnants of coal and rail history still make the street grid legible.
