Carbon Hill, AL

Carbon Hill is a Walker County city in northwest Alabama, where the 2020 census counted 1,769 residents. The settlement began in 1886 after the railroad reached the coal country, and mines soon drew workers and families into the community. Carbon Hill incorporated in February 1891. Rail freight carried local goods beyond the valley, while coal shaped the town's first economy and its physical growth.

The city also carries a strong New Deal history. Coal mines closed during the Great Depression, and Works Progress Administration and Public Works Administration projects helped build a new high school and improve sewers, sidewalks, and streets. A fire and tornado destroyed much of Carbon Hill in 2002, including both schools; the town later built a new school facility. Carbon Hill High School and the surrounding Walker County school system remain part of the present map. Its streets and civic buildings reflect a place rebuilt through several eras of coal, federal public works, and local recovery.
