About Carbon

Carbon is a town in Van Buren Township, Clay County, Indiana, United States. The 2020 census counted 263 residents. Carbon is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. Carbon had its start by the building of the railroad through that territory. The short version is that Carbon carries an earlier story into the places people know and use now. That is the local read on Carbon: its past remains attached to the places people use now. A post office was established at Carbon in 1870. A smaller settlement, identified on old maps as either South Carbon or Pontiac, stood on the south edge of town near what is now the intersection of Poplar Street and County Road 1400 North.
