About Carbondale

Carbondale is a city in Jackson County, Illinois, situated ninety-six miles southeast of St. Louis on the northern edge of the Shawnee National Forest. Established in 1853 as a railroad crossroads in the region known as Little Egypt, the city of approximately 22,200 is best known as the home of Southern Illinois University's flagship campus. The community features the historic Shryock Auditorium and public education is provided by Carbondale Elementary School District 95.
