Carlisle Barracks, PA

Carlisle Barracks is one of the oldest military installations in the country, tucked right against the historic town of Carlisle in Pennsylvania's Cumberland Valley. Today the post revolves around the U.S. Army War College, giving the neighborhood a quiet, collegiate feel with historic brick quarters, mature trees, and open parade grounds. The post carries centuries of history, dating back to the 1750s and later serving as the site of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, a painful chapter that remains an important part of the grounds' heritage.

Most residents who move here are connected to the War College's year-long academic programs, creating a tight and welcoming community where military families quickly get to know their neighbors. Daily life is relaxed and walkable, with parks, on-base amenities, and the nearby Army Heritage and Education Center. Because the installation sits right on the edge of town, it is easy to head off-post for local diners, farmers markets, and downtown shops, or to explore the nearby hiking trails across central Pennsylvania.
