About Carlisle

Carlisle is Nicholas County's seat, built around a courthouse square and Main Street buildings that date largely from the late 1800s and early 1900s. John Kincart gave land for the town in 1816 when the county seat moved from Ellisville, and the fourth courthouse, built in 1893-94, still serves the square. Routes 32 and 36 meet here, giving Carlisle a clear crossroads role in the Inner Bluegrass. It is a compact courthouse town with older storefronts and county business at its center.
