Carlstadt essentially splits into two distinct personalities across a ridge. Up on the western hill, you will find the residential heart of town, filled with quiet, tree-lined streets, classic homes, and local neighborhood spots. Down below to the east, the ground slopes into the Meadowlands, where an expansive commercial corridor hums with warehouses and distribution centers. Because the commercial district covers most of the borough's lowlands, residential Carlstadt keeps a cozy, close-knit neighborhood feel perched right above the bustle.

For commuters, getting around is remarkably straightforward. Quick connections to Route 17, Route 3, and the New Jersey Turnpike make driving into Manhattan or across North Jersey simple, and direct NJ Transit buses run through town toward Port Authority. Because the eastern half sits in the Meadowlands basin, low-lying commercial areas require extra attention to local flood maps. Fortunately, most residential neighborhoods sit comfortably on higher ground, away from both heavy freight traffic and marshland tides.
