About Carmel

Carmel is a Putnam County community with Revolutionary War memory, lake scenery, and Hudson Valley commuter context. The area was originally inhabited by Wappinger people, who sold land to Dutch traders in 1691. Today a statue of Sybil Ludington near Lake Gleneida is one of Carmel's best-known landmarks, honoring her famous ride. Carmel feels civic and semi-rural at once, with county government, reservoirs, schools, wooded roads, and New York City commuting all layered into a hilly local landscape.
