About Carmet
Carmet is a tiny Sonoma County coastal community along Highway 1, set among the bluffs and beaches north of Bodega Bay. At this scale, the surrounding coast is as important as the settlement itself: the Sonoma Coast runs from Bodega Head toward the Russian River, with rocky headlands, coves, tide pools, and open stretches of sand. Carmet Beach is one of the named beach areas in Sonoma Coast State Park, so the local landscape doubles as a recreation corridor for residents and visitors.
The area carries the older layers of the Sonoma Coast too. Nearby Bodega grew from Coast Miwok villages, Mexican-era land grants, fishing and ranching, and the stage routes that linked inland settlements with the ocean. Carmet is served by Shoreline Unified School District, whose schools connect this scattered coastline across a wide rural area. Fog, ocean wind, seasonal traffic, and the long drive between services are ordinary parts of life here. The result is a place defined by a narrow strip of homes and roads between the Pacific and the inland ranch country, with the shore always close at hand.
