Carnuel, NM

Carnuel is a Bernalillo County census-designated place at the mouth of Tijeras Canyon, east of Albuquerque. Its older name is tied to San Miguel de Loredo de Carnué, a 1763 land-grant settlement created as a protective community for genízaros of mixed Apache, Pueblo, and Hispanic ancestry. Raids led to the settlement’s abandonment, and descendants petitioned to reestablish it in 1819. Modern Carnuel sits along the same canyon corridor, where the Sandia foothills meet the route toward the Rio Grande valley. The local shorthand is land grant, canyon mouth, Albuquerque’s eastern edge, and a place whose story starts well before the metro map.
