Caro, MI

Caro is the Tuscola County seat in Michigan's Upper Thumb, northeast of Flint and east of Saginaw. The 2020 census counted 4,328 residents. The Cass River runs through the city, and Caro grew from a logging camp and trading-post landscape along the river in the mid-1800s. The city later became a sugar-beet center, with Michigan Sugar's Caro factory still one of the town's most recognizable pieces of the local economy. The surrounding roads quickly turn from blocks and storefronts to fields and small crossroads.

That change arrives within a few minutes of leaving downtown. Caro's county-seat role keeps the courthouse, schools, shops, and fairgrounds close together, while the river gives the place a softer edge than the industrial past suggests. The Cass River and surrounding farms still make the city's setting easy to read from the roads. Caro is a small Upper Thumb city with lumber and fur-trade beginnings, a sugar-beet present, and a county-seat center that serves the surrounding countryside.
