Carrizozo, NM

Carrizozo is Lincoln County's seat, with 972 people at the 2020 census, at the northern end of the Tularosa Basin where U.S. 54 and U.S. 380 meet. Before the railroad arrived in August 1899, the site held scattered ranches and a stagecoach crossing. The tracks turned it into a terminal town and the county's main rail access; Lincoln County moved its seat here in 1909, and Carrizozo incorporated in 1916. Homes and businesses from declining White Oaks moved in as railroad jobs and homesteads reshaped the basin.

Frank English built about 30 houses and commercial buildings between 1908 and 1925, many still in use. Carrizozo Heritage Museum focuses on the railroad boomtown, while Carrizozo Municipal Schools keep county-seat life tied to a small local campus. Four miles west, the Bureau of Land Management's Valley of Fires Recreation Area sits on a 1,500-year-old lava flow along U.S. 380. The local scoop is a New Mexico county seat with a rail-born street plan, old buildings, and a lava field at the edge of town.
