Carroll, OH

Carroll is a Fairfield County village along U.S. 33, where the Bloom-Carroll Local School District and a branch of the Fairfield County District Library give the small place its everyday institutions. The 2020 census counted 501 residents. The highway carries regional traffic past a settlement whose older shape came from water routes: Carroll was laid out in 1829 at the junction of the Ohio-Erie Canal and the Lancaster Lateral Canal, the only such canal junction in Fairfield County. A canal mural in the village keeps that infrastructure visible after the canals stopped carrying commerce.

Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, supplied the village's name. Carroll incorporated in 1858, after the canal era had made the settlement a local trading point. Today, school buildings, the library branch, the U.S. 33 corridor, and village utilities organize daily errands, while the canal junction gives those ordinary routes a deeper map: the town grew where two engineered waterways met.
