About Carrollton

Carrollton is Greene County’s seat in south-central Illinois, with U.S. 67 running through town as Fifth Street between Jacksonville and Alton. Greene County chose Carrollton as its seat when the county was organized in 1821, and the courthouse square has held that role ever since. The current courthouse, completed in 1892 with a clock tower and sandstone walls, gives the center a strong civic landmark; a cannon and the Henry T. Rainey monument add pieces of local history. Carrollton’s schools and its two long-running banks keep the small county-seat map active. It is an Illinois town where highway, courthouse square, and county history meet.
