Carrolltown, PA

Carrolltown is a Cambria County borough on U.S. Route 219, about twenty miles west of Altoona and eight miles north of Ebensburg, the county seat. The road carries through traffic toward Northern Cambria to the north and Ebensburg to the south, giving the borough a regional role beyond its population. The 2020 census counted 1,051 residents, and Carrolltown is part of the Johnstown metropolitan area. Route 219 is the borough's main visible connection to county centers beyond town.

The borough’s older story is religious as well as geographic. Carrolltown grew from a Benedictine community connected to Prince Demetrius Gallitzin, the Catholic priest whose work brought the church west of the Allegheny Front. St. Benedict’s remains a recognizable part of the town’s landscape, while the Route 219 corridor ties the borough to Cambria County’s larger network of work, schools, and services. Carrolltown’s map is compact, but its history reaches through the Allegheny crossings: a Catholic settlement, a borough on a north-south highway, and a community between Northern Cambria and Ebensburg.
