Cary started out in the mid-1800s as a quiet railroad stop built around a sawmill and a small hotel. Today, that rail line still runs straight through the historic center, giving the town a distinct sense of character that many fast-growing suburbs lack. You can still visit the original 1868 hotel, now the Page-Walker Arts and History Center, where locals gather for outdoor concerts, art exhibits, and community classes. Over the decades, Cary has grown from that one-square-mile depot into a thriving community perched right between downtown Raleigh and Research Triangle Park, offering new residents a great balance of city access and suburban comfort.

Much of Cary's growth took off after Research Triangle Park was established in the late 1950s. The arrival of major technology, healthcare, and research employers turned the town into a magnet for professionals from all over the country. Software giant SAS is based here on a sprawling wooded campus, and residents enjoy quick commutes to Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. The town is laid out across manicured master-planned communities, quiet cul-de-sacs, and convenient shopping centers, giving homebuyers plenty of neighborhood styles to choose from.

Downtown Cary has transformed into a lively hub, anchored by the popular Downtown Cary Park. This seven-acre park features walking paths, dog runs, performance pavilions, and great spots to grab a coffee or local beer while kids enjoy the play areas. Steps away, the Cary Depot provides Amtrak passenger rail service across North Carolina and up the East Coast, making regional travel refreshingly simple. For daily exercise, Cary offers over 100 miles of paved greenways, including the Black Creek and White Oak trails, which link residential subdivisions directly to local parks and schools.

Local festivals and entertainment draw residents together throughout the year. Every August, the Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival fills the downtown streets with local artisans, food trucks, and live music. Over at Symphony Lake, Koka Booth Amphitheatre hosts outdoor movies, North Carolina Symphony concerts, and cultural events like the annual Hum Sub Diwali celebration. Soccer fans can watch professional games and college tournaments at WakeMed Soccer Park. With its green spaces, strong job market, and welcoming atmosphere, Cary continues to be one of the Triangle's most appealing places to settle down.
