Cascade, ID

Cascade is Valley County's seat on the North Fork Payette River, where a rural mountain city meets Cascade Reservoir. The 2020 census counted 1,005 residents. The dam at the north end of town was completed in 1948 and created the reservoir along the city's west side, changing the valley's water map and giving the city a direct relationship with one of west-central Idaho's major lakes. Valley County offices, city services, and the local highway network make Cascade the county's civic center. U.S. 55 brings traffic through town and north toward McCall or south toward Boise, while the reservoir and river pull recreation toward boat ramps, fishing, and water routes.

The Payette River's water-management system is practical infrastructure as much as scenery; Cascade Dam helps regulate flows beyond the city. Schools, shops, county business, and lake-oriented visitors share the same valley floor. Cascade's local scoop is that the county-seat role and the reservoir were built into the same place: government and everyday errands on one side of the map, water and mountain travel immediately around it.
