Cascade, WI

Cascade is a Sheboygan County village in eastern Wisconsin, with 722 residents in the 2020 census. Wisconsin Highway 28 runs through the village, and its location places it within the Sheboygan metropolitan area while keeping a small-town scale. The local name once belonged to Ninevah, a settlement platted in 1848; the village grew amid the farm country and waterpower sites of the county. Today the village’s municipal address is on First Street, close to the small commercial blocks and the Mill Pond area.

Cascade became known beyond its size in 2010, when it installed two 100-kilowatt wind turbines to supply the municipal wastewater treatment plant. It was the first Wisconsin community to use locally produced wind energy for that purpose. Cascade Waterworks draws groundwater, and the wastewater plant also serves Lake Ellen Sanitary District No. 1, so the turbines are part of a practical utility system, not a roadside display. Cascade is a village where Highway 28, a mill pond, farm roads, and locally generated power all meet.
