Cash, SC

Cash is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. It first appeared as a CDP in the 2020 census, with 445 people and 1.52 square miles of land. The community was named for Colonel Ellerbe Boggan Crawford Cash, a prominent local military and political figure, and older records also use the name Cashs. The name is unusually well preserved in the old post-office designation Cash's Depot, established in 1880 and kept open until 1917.

Cash's Depot was part of the rural commercial world of Chesterfield County, where small post offices and general stores marked the county-road landscape. A South Carolina Department of Transportation study of country stores lists a Cash's Depot store operated by Mrs. L. G. Grant, adding a retail stop to the postal record. Today's Cash is a CDP rather than an incorporated town, so its story is carried by the name, the surrounding farm country, and the people who still use the Chesterfield address. The local scoop is a small Chesterfield community whose history survives in a colonel's name, a vanished depot, and a still-recognized place.
