Cassville, WI

Cassville is a Grant County village of 777 residents at the 2020 census, pressed between the Mississippi River and the bluffs of southwestern Wisconsin. Henry Schoolcraft noted a Meskwaki village here in 1820, and a permanent settlement followed in the 1820s. In 1836, land speculators promoted Cassville as a possible capital of the new Wisconsin Territory, a grand idea that never made it past the river landing. The village kept going anyway, with ferries, canning, fishing, ice harvesting, and river trade shaping its working life.

Cassville's biggest historical character is Nelson Dewey, Wisconsin's first governor, whose Stonefield estate stood just outside the village. After the estate fell apart, the state and local governments bought the land in 1936. Today Nelson Dewey State Park preserves the bluff and river views, while Stonefield Historic Site recreates a 1900s farming village and houses the State Agricultural Museum. Add the Cassville car ferry and you get the local scoop: this is a Mississippi town where the river is still the road, the park is part of the family album, and the old political dream remains a good story.
