Castine, ME

Tucked at the tip of a quiet peninsula where Penobscot Bay meets the Bagaduce River, Castine is one of Maine's oldest and prettiest coastal villages. With around 1,300 year-round residents, the town feels both peaceful and historic, filled with preserved 18th-century architecture and elm-lined streets leading down to the water. A big part of the local energy comes from Maine Maritime Academy, whose waterfront campus and training vessels keep the harbor active with students and mariners throughout the school year.

For families, daily life centers around the historic Adams School, which teaches kindergarten through eighth grade before sending older students to nearby George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill. Because Castine sits at the end of the road, there is virtually no drive-through traffic, creating a calm, walkable setting with local shops, dockside dining, and easy access to the water.
