Castorland, NY

Castorland is a quiet village in Lewis County, tucked along the western edge of the Black River valley where the Beaver River flows in. Home to around 300 residents, the community has a surprisingly colorful history. In the 1790s, French refugees fleeing the Revolution purchased a massive wilderness tract here to build a new settlement, naming it after the local beavers. Harsh North Country winters and financial troubles eventually brought an end to the grand colony, but the French name remained on the map.

Today, Castorland offers a peaceful rural setting for people looking for a slower pace and scenic Upstate surroundings. The village has a relaxed, small-town character centered around quiet streets and farmland views. Neighboring hubs like Lowville, Carthage, and Croghan are all a short drive away along Route 410, giving residents easy access to everyday shopping, local schools, dining, and outdoor recreation across the Black River valley and nearby Adirondack foothills.
