Catarina, TX

Catarina is a Dimmit County census-designated place on the South Texas ranch and farm belt. The 2020 Census records 70 residents across about 3.76 land square miles near 28.3499 N, 99.6161 W. The Texas State Historical Association places Catarina on U.S. 83 southeast of Asherton and traces its early growth to a railroad depot, cattle-shipping pens, and the headquarters of the Taft-Catarina Ranch. A Texas Historical Commission marker describes the Catarina Hotel as a surviving reminder of the 1920s development boom, when the town held many businesses. Catarina's present scale sits beside a much larger history of ranching, rail, and irrigation speculation.
