Cateechee, SC

Cateechee is an unincorporated community and census-designated place on a hillside above Twelvemile Creek in southwestern Pickens County. South Carolina 137 forms its eastern edge, Norris sits to the southeast, and the creek flows west toward the Seneca River. The 2020 census counted 321 residents.

The mill history matters here. Pickens County historical materials identify Cateechee as the site of the county’s first modern cotton mill, established in 1895, while state preservation records still mark the old mill and village landscape. Historic properties on Cateechee Main Street and South Street preserve pieces of the residential village that grew around the mill. The hillside, creek, and surviving mill-related streets give the place a physical shape that is still easy to recognize. Today Cateechee is a residential pocket with no separate municipal government; school, road, emergency, and land-use matters sit with county and neighboring-town systems. Norris and Six Mile are nearby civic reference points, while Twelvemile Creek keeps the CDP tied to its origin.
