Cato, NY

Cato is a village in Cayuga County, New York, within the larger Town of Cato. The village is one of the county's small named centers, set among farms, drumlins, and waterways in the eastern part of the county. Its local map is shaped by the old railroad and by Parker Pond, formerly called Forest Lake, which lies just south of Cato Village and was once used for ice harvesting before refrigeration changed that work.

The village depot was one of two train depots in the Town of Cato, the other standing at Brick Church, and rail service helped Cato handle the movement of farm goods and passengers across the surrounding countryside. That village-scale story is distinct from the wider town around it: a compact center, a depot, nearby farms, and a pond that once supplied a winter industry. Cato still carries those layers in its name and streets, with the larger Cayuga County road network close at hand. It is a small New York village whose history comes through transportation, ice, and the agricultural landscape immediately beyond its boundary.
